DALLAS (AP) — A private company that ran a Texas jail where a woman allegedly went blind following days of medical neglect before her 2019 death has agreed to a $7 million lawsuit settlement, her family’s attorney said Thursday.
The payout over other deaths and incidents that led to lawsuits and investigations of the company, which runs facilities where thousands of people are incarcerated.
“If you’re going to cut corners and put profits over people’s lives, there will be a steep price to pay,” said Heipt, a Seattle-based lawyer who represents Barlow-Austin’s husband and mother.
This is worth a watch, because it’s a very clarifying six minutes and change from a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing yesterday. The Democrats, who are in the process of trying to pass a bill through the Senate which would essentially create federally-guaranteed abortion on demand regardless of state or local laws on the subject, and they called in a host of witnesses to push that bill.

Recently leaked Pentagon documents have revealed that U.S. intelligence and special forces have been conducting a shadow war in the Middle East and North Africa in an attempt to disrupt the Russian mercenary group, Wagner.
While the Biden administration has shown concern over Wagner fighters leading efforts in Ukraine to take the city of Bakhmut, the administration has also long had concerns regarding the expansion of Wagner’s presence in Africa.
Ben Roethlisberger recognizes and respects the talent that is Lamar Jackson and he doesn’t want you to get it twisted. The Pittsburgh Steelers icon saw Robert Griffin III take his comments out of context and wanted to set the record straight.
Roethlisberger spoke about Jackson earlier this month on his podcast ‘Footbahlin.’ He spoke to how opposing defenses are less scared of the Ravens quarterback when he is in the pocket.
His comments, specifically, spoke to how defenses will move the safeties down to stop Jackson from running and try to force him to throw.

NFL Hall of Famer and New York Jets legend Joe Namath responded to the team’s newly signed quarterback Aaron Rodgers discussing not taking Namath’s famous No. 12 jersey.
Rodgers was introduced to the New York faithful on Wednesday and one of the biggest questions Jets fans wanted to know was whether he would take Broadway Joe up on his jersey number offer.
A few months ago, Namath said that he would be willing to give Rodgers his retired No. 12 if it meant bringing him to the team. Rodgers has always worn the number since being drafted in 2005.

West Virginia’s Republican Gov. Jim Justice filed paperwork Thursday to run for Senate in 2024 to challenge the lone pro-life Democrat, Joe Manchin.
While both Justice and Manchin are pro-life, Democrats control the Senate — which means they control committees, hearings, investigations and, most importantly, the legislative agenda. A Republican-controlled Senate would be more likely to advance the pro-life cause and halt radically pro-abortion nominees.
CNN demoted John King from his daily television show and gave it to his ex-wife.
Thursday, the network announced that Dana Bash would replace King on Inside Politics from 12-1 p.m. ET.
There is never a good way to lose your own TV show, be it for poor ratings, calling women over 40 past their primes, or #MeToo. But losing it to the woman who left you is perhaps the Holy Grail of humiliation.
King and Bash also share a son together. Awkward for the son it must be, having to explain to his pals why his father just got canceled.

Fracking is a method of increasing the amount of oil and gas that can be extracted from a reservoir.
Fracking, combined with directional drilling, allowed U.S. natural gas production to climb 84 percent, and oil production to grow 137 percent.
The amount of new gas produced by fracking decreased the price of natural gas by $6.83/MCF from 2008 to 2020.
Research indicates fracking is not causing water or air pollution, or damaging earthquakes.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Thousands of Native American remains in Ohio could finally be laid to rest under a provision that has passed the state House, the start of a process that tribal members have waited on for decades.
The Ohio History Connection, a nonprofit organization that works to preserve Ohio history, currently has over 7,100 ancestral remains and funerary objects like pieces of clothing or jewelry in its possession that should have been returned under a loosely followed federal law in the 1990s, a ProPublica investigation found as part of a look into U.S.

President Joe Biden was photographed on Wednesday holding a “cheat sheet” showing the pre-approved questions that reporters asked at a press conference.
At a joint press conference with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, Biden held several notecards in his hand. One showed “press conference prep,” while another provided Biden with the name, picture, and affiliation of reporters who had been pre-selected to ask questions. Shockingly, the notecards even showed Biden had advance knowledge of what questions would be asked.
Fox News lost in the primetime ratings in the 25-to-54 year old demographic without Tucker Carlson hosting the 8 PM Eastern slot, with both CNN and MSNBC topping Carlson’s interim replacement in the demo on Tuesday.
On Monday, April 24, with Brian Kilmeade piloting the renamed Fox News Tonight at 8 PM, the network hemorrhaged about 600,000 viewers from the previous Tucker-hosted Monday. Kilmeade’s poor performance resulted in Fox News actually losing the 25-to-54-year-old demographic in the primetime (8 p to 11 pm) period.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Jerry Springer, the onetime mayor and news anchor whose namesake TV show featured a three-ring circus of dysfunctional families willing to bare all on weekday afternoons including brawls, obscenities and blurred images of nudity, died Thursday at 79.
At its peak, “The Jerry Springer Show” was a ratings powerhouse and a U.S. cultural pariah, synonymous with lurid drama. Known for chair-throwing and bleep-filled arguments, the daytime talk show was a favorite American guilty pleasure over its 27-year run, at one point topping Oprah Winfrey’s show.
Electrification is a key part of the transition to renewable energy, and phasing out combustion-engine vehicles will be a significant piece of that transition. Despite subsidies and tax breaks around electric vehicles in the US, the cars haven’t taken over a large percentage of market share yet, perhaps because their sticker price is still higher than that of gas-powered cars.
Zooming out to the rest of the world, though, it seems EV adoption is going pretty well.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers were expected to begin a second round of debate Thursday on a bill that would ban abortion once cardiac activity can be detected in an embryo, which generally occurs around the sixth week of pregnancy and before most women know they’re pregnant.
Supporters advanced the first round of debate earlier this month with only a one-vote margin to break a filibuster. The bill must survive Thursday’s debate and a final round to pass, but the effort in the Republican-controlled state remains in question.
