A 16-year-old North Carolina high school student says he was suspended just for saying “illegal alien” while discussing word meaning in English class — possibly ruining his chances of landing a college sports scholarship.
Christian McGhee, a student at Central Davidson High School in Lexington, received a three-day suspension last week after he used the term in English class, the Carolina Journal reported.
The co-chair of Columbia University’s Board of Trustees, Claire Shipman, told a congressional panel on Wednesday that the proliferation of anti-Semitism on the school’s Manhattan campus is “shocking.”
Shipman’s husband, Jay Carney, served as press secretary under former president Barack Obama, a Columbia alumnus whose longtime friendship with one of the school’s notorious anti-Semitic professors became a central issue in his 2008 campaign.

The Virginia-based consultancy is being sued by three former detainees of the infamous prison, who allege they were tortured 20 years ago. The hearing began on Monday, after almost 16 years of procedural delays.
